"WHITE: A PHILIPPA GREGORY ESSAY CONTEST"

Who, you may ask is Philippa Gregory? She is a historical fiction writer whose background as a bona fide historian paved the way for her acclaimed novels, one of which has been adapted by both TV and film: The Other Boleyn Girl is perhaps her best known work to date. The movie, which stars contemporary film ingenues Scarlett Johanssen and Natalie Portman, along with one of my personal favorites, Eric Bana, was nominated for three awards. More than anything else, the book and film rekindled a worldwide fascination for the Tudor period.

In The White Queen, Gregory maps out the intriguing lives of the Plantagenets, the family of royals that preceeded the Tudors. The book does so by focusing on Elizabeth Woodville and her secret marriage to the King of England, a union that would spawn one of the greatest tragedies and mysteries in history: The young princes who were imprisoned in the London Tower, all for the sake of ambition and greed. The White Queen is the first in Gregory's new series of books.

LUCY'S BONUS TREAT: HAPPY NEW YEAR EVERYONE...

Before making your suggestion kindly read the mechanics by clicking here!

Guess you guys thought Lucy's 12 Treats offer was over, huh? Well, the folks at Fully Booked have decided to give away a bonus treat to celebrate the New Year! They wanted to welcome 2011 with a bang so they're giving away one copy of "First Step 2 Forever" by Justin Bieber (click on the link for a complete description). Mind you the stock of this title is completely wiped out and what Fully Booked is giving away is courtesy of Harper Collins. Rumor has it that the clamor for this title is WORLDWIDE! Talk about Belieber Fever!

I must confess I'm a bit of a stickler, and even if I don't agree with spelling "to" as "2," I've got a teeny bopper sister who really makes me laugh, and she practically breathes Justin Bieber. She is perpetually dancing, singing, watching, reading, and collecting every single thing with his likeness stamped on it that she chances upon. As long as she spells properly, I am glad she appreciates music. Need I say more?

What would you give your sister for Christmas?

We'll be announcing the winner on January 3, 2010. Good luck everybody and have fun!

LUCY'S 12 CHRISTMAS TREATS: ON THE TWELFTH DAY OF CHRISTMAS...

Before making your suggestion kindly read the mechanics by clicking here!

This is the twelfth and final day of "Lucy's 12 Christmas Treats" offer! We are giving away one hardcover edition of "Italian Grill" by Mario Batali (click on the title for a complete description).

If there's one thing as great as having a mom who can't seem to tear herself away from the kitchen, its having a dad who is practically glued to the grill! This has been my fortunate situation growing up in a household that enjoys their food.

My dad just loves to grill anything he can get his hands on (well, mostly everything). He will find every and any excuse to grill. He once decided to throw an impromptu party and grill some burgers, hot dogs, and some fish and shrimp for a few of his buddies and our family one April Fool's Day. As a joke, we got him an apron with the print of a curvaceous female body in a bikini plastered in the front. My dad is a big guy (a lot like Mario Batali--he also has longish hair and a beard) with a great sense of humor so he gamely wore the apron, and bore our ribbing all throughout the party. I remember he once said that Mario Batali is the kind of cook that he could respect because he looks like he really enjoys his food!

I adore my dad. I think he is one of the jolliest, kindest, and funniest people I've ever known (and will get to know). When you make your suggestion, think about what it is about your dad that you love the most!

Italian Grill by Mario Batali is published by Harper Collins! Special thanks to them for this treat!

We'll be announcing the winner tomorrow (December 24, 2010). Good luck everybody and have fun!

LUCY'S 12 CHRISTMAS TREATS: ON THE ELEVENTH DAY OF CHRISTMAS...

Before making your suggestion kindly read the mechanics by clicking here!

This is the eleventh day of "Lucy's 12 Christmas Treats" offer! We are giving away one copy of "Style A to Zoe" by Rachel Zoe (click on the title for a complete description).

My aunt is nearing her fifties, and she still possesses the ability to captivate the people she meets because of her innate elegance. It doesn't really matter what she wears. I've seen her in her nightie and she still looks so stylish and in an original way. Another reason I lover her so is because she never criticizes my ratty pair of sneakers, which I can't seem to outgrow (I will wear them until they fall apart!). She has always been living proof that true style can't be bought or copied. I thought of her immediately when I saw this book.

When you make your suggestion think about an aunt who inspires you. It could be for her intelligence, beauty, kindness, and the list goes on. What matters is the indelible impression she has left on you and most assuredly those she meets.

Style A to Zoe: the Art of Fashion, Beauty, & Everything Glamour by Rachel Zoe is published by Hachette Book GroupThanks to them for this special treat!

We'll be announcing the winner tomorrow (December 23, 2010). Good luck everybody and have fun!

LUCY'S 12 CHRISTMAS TREATS: ON THE TENTH DAY OF CHRISTMAS...

Hi! Before making your suggestion kindly read the mechanics by clicking here!

This is the ninth day of "Lucy's 12 Christmas Treats" offer! We are giving away one copy of "YOU: Raising Your Child" by Michael F. Roizen, M.D. and Mehmet Oz, M.D. (click on the title for a complete description).

I remember when my brother and his wife had their first kid. I was living with them at the time to help out and both my sister-in-law, and she and I didn't know the first thing about taking care of a newborn. It was Summer vacation so I had no school. I decided to pitch in cos I knew my sister-in-law (who I think is one of the coolest people on this planet) really needed a hand with my brother at work all day.

We were on the phone with both her mom and mine quite a lot. We didn't even know how to burp my nephew for crying out loud! There are a lot of books that tackle the rearing and care of children, but I thought of this one because it pretty much covers everything from... please see title. Comprehensive and easy to understand, I think my sister-in-law would love this book. Even if I gave it to her now it would definitely still apply for a good number of years.

When you make your suggestion think about your sister-in-law. (In my case she's the one who joined the family by marrying my dorky brother.) She may not have been there from the very beginning but you can't even begin to imagine family life without her now!

YOU: Raising Your Child by Michael F. Roizen, M.D. and Mehmet Oz, M.D. is published by Simon & Schuster. Thanks to them for this special treat!

We'll be announcing the winner tomorrow (December 21, 2010). Good luck everybody and have fun!

LUCY'S 12 CHRISTMAS TREATS: ON THE NINTH DAY OF CHRISTMAS...

Hi! Before making your suggestion kindly read the mechanics by clicking here!

This is the ninth day of "Lucy's 12 Christmas Treats" offer! We are giving away one copy of "Allure: Confessions of a Beauty Editor" by Linda Wells (click on the title for a complete description).

My best girlfriend and I couldn't be anymore different. She loves everything girly. I've always been a bit of a tomboy. She just loves make-up, and I haven't the foggiest idea how to apply eyeshadow. If there's one thing we have in common though its our love for books—sure our preferred genres kind of differ, but we've always been the kind of friends who could sit in comfortable silence, books in hand, and something to munch on nearby.

When you make your suggestion, think of your best girl bud and what she really likes—even if you don't necessarily understand why. Friendship is accepting the beauty of differences, and there's no better time than to celebrate this than on Christmas.

Allure: Confessions of a Beauty Editor by Linda Wells is published by Bulfinch, a division of the Hachette Book Group. Special thanks to them for this treat!

We'll be announcing the winner tomorrow (December 20, 2010). Good luck everybody and have fun!

LUCY'S 12 CHRISTMAS TREATS: ON THE EIGHTH DAY OF CHRISTMAS...

Hi! Before making your suggestion kindly read the mechanics by clicking here!

This is the EIGHTH DAY of Fully Booked's "Lucy's 12 Treats" Christmas offer! We are giving away one copy of  "Jamie at Home: Cook Your Way to the Good Life" by Jamie Oliver (click on the title for a complete description).
There are two things about my mom that made me suggest this title beginning with the fact that she loves to cook (and I love to eat what she cooks--most of my friends do too) and second: she adores Jamie Oliver. I don't blame her since half of the world's female population does anyway!

She also loves his recipes and has tried them out, adding a twist of her own, with us--her family--as the lucky test group. I'm sure she will love this book.

When you make a suggestion for your mom think about what she loves doing best--besides taking care of her family. Show her that you encourage her hobbies and want her to have a good time doing what she enjoys most!

We'll be announcing the winner tomorrow (December 18, 2010). Good luck everybody and have fun!

Jamie at Home by Jamie Oliver is published Hyperion Books. Special thanks to them for this treat!

LUCY'S 12 CHRISTMAS TREATS: ON THE SEVENTH DAY OF CHRISTMAS...

Hi! Before making your suggestions kindly read the mechanics by clicking here!

This is the SEVENTH DAY of Fully Booked's "Lucy's 12 Treats" Christmas offer! We are giving away one copy of  "First Library Sesame Street" by the Editors of Publications International Ltd. (click on the title for a complete description).
There's something about babies that gets most people I know all soft and gooey inside. I am the proud aunt of twin girls who were born in early 2010. I've been spending every weekend at their house (well most) since they were born, and was witness to a lot of their firsts. They are both starting to show real signs of character already, and even if they are nearly identical, I've learned to tell them apart just by their expressions. Babies are interesting and lovely creatures. Its nice to know how we all once were when we were that young. Sometimes I feel that they know a LOT more about the world than we think they do.

I suggested this title because its like a mini library--there are 12 board books in one package. Being the fair aunt that I want to be, I figured six books for each of them would be just right, and this would be a good time for them to start learning how to share! Ha! I also love Sesame Street. Its a love that extends to the classic version of the 70s and early 80s, and to the newer spin offs. I want to be the aunt that gets them hooked! (It is also perfect for them since this is ideal and SAFE for children 10 months and over).

When you make your suggestion think of a niece of yours who is especially close to your heart, someone you want to sort influence (in a good way of course!) and guide. She doesn't have to be a baby! She can be any age.

We'll be announcing the winner tomorrow (December 16, 2010). Good luck everybody and have fun!

LUCY'S 12 CHRISTMAS TREATS: ON THE SIXTH DAY OF CHRISTMAS...

Hi! Before making your suggestions kindly read the mechanics by clicking here!

This is the SIXTH DAY of Fully Booked's "Lucy's 12 Treats" Christmas offer! We are giving away one copy of  "Angels & Demons: Special Illustrated Edition" by Dan Brown (click on the title for a complete description).
I remember an old professor of mine who was very much into the whole Dan Brown craze when The Da Vinci Code first came out. This professor of mine was actually my literature professor, and she was one of my favorite teachers because even if she was strict, we learned--well at least I'd like to think I did. We never really tackled Dan Brown in her class. She was responsible for my appreciation for classics I never thought I would pick up like Leo Tolstoy or  latter ones like F. Scott Fitzgerald. The reason I knew she liked Dan Brown was because I would always see a copy of one of his books peeking out of her stack of files, papers, and books that she would bring to class.

When you make your suggestion for your favorite professor, try to dig beneath the layers of what they actually taught and discover what among those, they actually has a real affinity for.

We will be announcing the winner tomorrow (December 14, 2010)! Good luck and have fun!

Angels & Demons: Special Illustrated Edition by Dan Brown is published by Simon & Schuster. Special thanks to them for this treat!
