When I first realized I was going to meet James Jean, I first wondered about what to ask him. What images does he have locked up in his mind to come up with his art? Faceless fairies, engulfing waves, dripping fingers, floating figures, creatures I've never seen before, I thought, how does one even think of this? I expected to meet someone I couldn't understand, just as I couldn't grasp his world. Instead, I met one of the most down-to-earth, hardworking, educated, and street smart artists I've ever come to know.

I very much enjoyed sitting in his Artist's Talks. He not only shed light upon his work and how he conceptualized them, but also how he moves forward with progressing his art. A few points that struck a chord in me when he explained them:

When asked how he avoids repeating what he had done before, he said that it is best to develop the better part of what you've done already and translate that into something new. Just as with his work now, he translates his signature images into different objects, jewelry and scarves.

When asked about the effect art school had on his work, he said “art school is what you put into it, not what it puts into you.” He had not started out as the top of his class nor the best at his craft, but he allowed the experience to develop his skill and his taste in aesthetics, and that, in the end, set him apart in his generation.

And lastly, what I will take forever with me is what he said about goals and success. He was asked in the open forum for what his ultimate goal was in his career. When did he think he was going to consider himself successful? But he noted that success isn't in having a goal and achieving it (though of course, for some people, it is). For him, he achieved his success in having something he believed in, something to do everyday that he loved and thought was worthwhile, and he let that take him somewhere. “The success comes from the diligence,” he said.

I can't explain what an exhilarating and inspirational three days it was: meeting students and customers who are his fans, showing his books and art to passersby, following the events, even having lunch with him! What a perfect way to begin 2012. Until now, I can't wait to experience the same kind of excitement for the rest of the year. :)

What goes through the mind of an artist? What floats in shapes and fills the clouds of thoughts that the rest of us do not see? What colors are combined and images brought out when he closes his eyes? Who are the creatures that burst in life and flavor and which ones are those that hide in the dark? These are things I only wonder. These are things I hope to ask.

In two days, I will meet James Jean, and hopefully find out what, in fact, goes through the mind of an artist?

We just finished setting up the windows and in-store displays for all the Metro Manila stores (nationwide very soon!), and all I can see when I walk around the store is Santa! Take a look at a few of my favorite ones in our different branches:

Gift Guide 2011 Part 1: Book Tower Edition

It's no secret that I spend endless hours in my week walking around Fully Booked. For the first edition of my holiday gift guide this year, I decided to focus on something that everyone would be able to easily find in our store: book towers.

Ever since I started hanging around here, I always noticed how creative the staff is in presenting the books. I think they have a lot of fun when we get a lot of stock of a particular title, making different patterns with the spine side and page side. I, for one, love noticing how the book towers evolve as the stock lessens each week.

So here, as the first part of many, I present the most easily found titles and for whom I think they would make appropriate gifts. Let the holiday shopping hoopla begin!

The atrium of the Fort branch is always the perfect place to find a book tower -- whether very tall from the floor, or very simple from just a table. Here, we see the different tables dedicated to the Childrens section, with The Graveyard Book, Envy, Ms. Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children, Beastly, Torment, and Zombies vs. Unicorns in plain sight!

For the Collector: I always find myself staring at special editions of titles, wanting to add them to my shelf, but never willing to spend as much as they cost to actually own them. After all, they're like a nice bonus: a story you already know, but you would also love to browse through the pages of illustrations and symbols and maps that are related to it. This special illustrated edition of The Lost Symbol by Dan Brown would be the perfect holiday gift for a loved one who you know loves mystery and adventure fiction and would enjoy the story and images this particular printing of the book offers.

For the Fantastical Feel: A Song of Ice and Fire by George R. R. Martin has been a best seller for almost the entire year, mainly because of the release of its television counterpart. We always try to have a lot of stock of the book (and always run out, still!), and now, we also have multiple copies of the UK edition box set. Take a friend into the world of dragons and direwolves and have them experience a real winter this Christmas!

For the Fiction Fanatic: I remember when this book tower was as tall as me! Hahahaha! :-) Now, a few inches are all that is left of the mass market edition of Jonathan Franzen's Freedom. Only a few more copies left for the book-loving friend you have!

For the Fiction Fanatic: A Moment in the Sun by John Sayles was also another book that had an intricate display before now consolidated into a mini-tower. Take a friend through the turn of the century, from World War and from different points of view of Americans, Europeans and fellow Filipinos. Were you able to catch Amigo, John Sayles' film, this year?

Haruki Murakami's 1Q84 is another of this year's hot topics in literature. For any Murakami fan that you know (if they hadn't already grabbed a copy of this), this double-cover hardbound printing of the book would be a great gift.

For the Motion Picture Maven: Two book titles with movie adaptations and a lot of stock in our stores: World War Z by Max Brooks is a fun first person narration of a zombie apocalypse (whose movie version will star Brad Pitt), while Drive by James Sallis is a sullen story of a stunt driver turned dark knight, whose film counterpart is played with so much charm by Ryan Gosling. Both short, easy reads for the film fanatic getting ready to watch the cinema release! Drive is actually in theaters now!

For the Business-Minded Buddy: The 4-Hour Workweek sounds like a dream to anyone who works (at least) nine hours a day. But thankfully, here is a way to achieve that stability in one's career. For the business-minded buddy who always knew there is so much in life to work towards, this would be the perfect present to plan his future!

For the Business-Minded Buddy: Robert Kiyosaki has been a large player in the business book market since Rich Dad, Poor Dad. In Unfair Advantage, he talks about getting on top in the financial world, and being able to reach the same success as those with experience and education in banking have.

For the Curious Cat: Freakonomics has been around for maybe five or so years now, and it is always a mainstay in our list of top 20 business books! This pile was one of those that was as tall as me as well, and here, it now lies beside one of the shelves in our third floor. Perfect for the curious cat in all of us!

For the Music and Media Lover: Steven Tyler's all-access pass to his mind, misadventures and musings would be a great holiday addition to one's bookshelf, especially for rock fans and Aerosmith fans. Parked right beside the hilarious My Book Wook 2 by Russell Brand, these two would make a great pairing for holiday gifts!

For the Music and Media Lover: Two of music's most mysterious figures, Lady Gaga and Keith Richards, and their books! Give your Lady Gaga loving friend a dose of the inner-workings of her mind, or let the rock and roll fan have his share of the Rolling Stones' debauchery in Life by Keith Richards. The legendary guitarist pens his own story, and even wins a GQ Writer of the Year recognition for his effort.

With the crazy season of Christmas coming up, I find myself walking through Fully Booked more and more. This time though, I look for gadgets and gift options rather than titles to browse through. Today, I found a cute Lego-themed planner. Its rubber covers have the texture of the early childhood toy, but it's also soft and light enough to carry around everyday.

With weekly and monthly views to match! Lovely.

BOOK PEEK: Modernist Cuisine

A Different Skine

They are finally here! :-)

Moleskine ventures into new projects with classic labels, this time with one of my all-time favorite franchises, Star Wars. Now, they've released collections with Peanuts and Pac-Man designs as well, leaving fans everywhere looking for this notebook, with its style both sleek and youthful at the same time. I want to buy everything! Haha!

I also spotted some cute Moleskine planners in earth tones. A bit of a difference from the usual red and black. :-)

BOOK PICK + GIVEAWAY: Some Thoughts on The Son of Neptune

I will try to write the first part of this entry without any spoilers for The Son of Neptune.

When I first read the Percy Jackson and the Olympians series, I read all five books in one week. It wasn’t because I was so hooked; I just felt I had to catch up with the rest of the world, especially with the release of The Lost Hero, and just recently, The Son of Neptune.

Reading a series that fast doesn’t allow a reader to become a fan right away. Don’t get me wrong, I love the series now, having read until The Son of Neptune. But upon a first reading, I looked at facts and events rather than characters and motives. It was only when I reached The Last Olympian, when the final battle and ultimate conflict was about to be faced, that I actually stopped and thought about Percy having grown up so much since first meeting him, Luke having become so desperate since my first impression of him, and Kronos having built a real physical presence around himself since his haunting shadow in The Lightning Thief. The flashbacks in that book also helped in growing emotionally close to the characters, especially to Luke, Thalia and Annabeth. I’m such a sucker for flashbacks, I really am.

It’s funny; just as in Harry Potter we find a huge chunk of the story is about Dumbledore, here we find that in Percy Jackson and the Olympians, much of the events had transpired because of Luke Castellan.

By the end of the series, I didn’t know whether or not to believe Luke was still a hero inside (though the series does angle it towards his redemption), but I was left wishing I had read a little more slowly and perhaps gotten to know him a little more.

Thankfully, with the Heroes of Olympus series, we don’t have to say good-bye to everyone we grew to love before. And to continue the story with fans of the series, I am giving away:

Now for the real reason for this entry: some thoughts on The Son of Neptune. (Spoilers after this cut, so don't read the rest if you haven't finished the book!)

Overall, I really appreciate how much bigger the world of demigods becomes in The Son of Neptune. We get a glimpse of other ones existing in the world in The Lost Hero, with Jason hinting he may have been part of a different camp. Here, we meet that camp, and not only see how they had been living and surviving in the modern times, but we also realize how different Camp Jupiter is from Camp Half-Blood. Aside from being larger in population, the Roman settlement is far more advanced in their government, in protecting themselves, and in building an entire community that demigods can raise families in rather than just spending a short summer in.

(Aside: I remember having a debate with my friend once, about how he couldn’t grasp the world of Harry Potter because it seemed so small. He felt that of all the wizarding places in the world, how could the end of the secret of magic remain in the hands of one boy in a boarding school in Scotland? I suppose if I had him read this series, he wouldn’t have a problem with how the fate of the world would depend on Percy and his friends. Haha!)

The world also becomes wider with all the belief systems included in the series. With Greek, Roman, ancestral Chinese and even Native American counterparts discussed, Rick Riordan marries different spiritual and supernatural beliefs popularly recognized today. Somehow, he has made all the connections make sense, at least to me, and has made the common threads that tie humanity together even more apparent.

With all these new characters introducing new aspects of mythology, it was also very comforting to find our friend Percy again, after his being so mysteriously absent in The Lost Hero. I remember being a bit sad after reading The Last Olympian because I thought I wouldn’t be with the same characters after that. I was thrilled reading bits of Camp Half-Blood and Annabeth’s quest in the previous book, but I was really happy to find Percy again here. His memory loss had an even bigger impact than Jason’s since we know Percy so well. We know exactly what he’s trying to remember (except perhaps his immediate past). We know who Annabeth is and what their relationship had begun from. We know who tries to communicate with him in his sleep. We know the monsters and creatures he came across before, and we know why he knows how to deal with them now. It’s really amazing how such a simple choice of which character loses his memory pulls heartstrings in readers, especially in me!

Another adventure with another hero concludes, and we audiences are left with the wait for another title. I think I can speak for everyone who has finished The Son of Neptune when I say that just as in The Lost Hero, I was in utter disbelief upon turning the last page, and finding a glossary of gods and goddesses instead of the next chapter. How long do we have to wait for The Mark of Athena, again?!

BOOK PEEK: George Harrison: Living in a Material World

I don't think anyone can ever say they are too young for The Beatles. Even for someone like me, who didn't live during the pinnacle of their fame, The Beatles will always be a monument of rock music, a quartet of musicians that meshed so well musically.

Just a few days ago, Martin Scorsese's documentary on the life of the late George Harrison, Living in a Material World debuted on HBO in the UK and the US, and that was just about the time I spotted two books about the band, on the fourth floor of our Fort branch: John, Paul, George, Ringo & Me by Tony Barrow, and George Harrison: Living in a Material World.

The first title, penned by the band's former Press Officer, is a retelling of how the author knew the Beatles the best, and how the four boys from Liverpool lived during their most famous days. I haven't been able to browse through it so much yet, but I've already taken so much time today just looking through the second book! Edited and curated by Harrison's widow, Olivia Harrison, George Harrison: Living in a Material World compiles the quiet Beatle's most reflective quotes, most personal moments and most memorable relationships as told by the people who knew him best. Here is a book peek into the 400-page coffee table book that I can't seem to stop looking through over and over again:

A memory written on a folded napkin: With many old letters and scanned tickets from his concerts, Living in a Material World documents Harrison's life in such poignant detail.

Lastly, the most interesting part of the book: that it contains Harrison's personal photographs, those that he took to record his life, those that others took with his camera. Here, he is with Eric Clapton in a garden, in what looks to be a legendary moment lost in time.

Severus Snape, a Great Teacher

Disclaimer: Though I can't imagine this as a real warning to anyone, I must mention that you should not read the following entry if you have not yet finished the entire Harry Potter series, or if you care about important and life-changing plot points in the series being spoiled for you. :-)

To remember World Teachers' Day on Facebook and Twitter, I asked "Who is your favorite literary student-mentor duo?" Though I came across many characters from young adult literature (Percy Jackson, Harry Potter, The Perks of Being a Wallflower, etc.), what intrigued me most was a response with the tandem of Harry Potter and Professor Snape. The pairing was most unlikely to me, due to the fact that they disdained each other almost until the very end of Snape's life, and they had no real student-mentor interaction that proved to be productive for Harry (except the failed stint when Snape was to teach Occlumency). However, upon reflection, Harry must have learned lessons from Snape that he had not encountered from any of the many mentors he had growing up.

Though Snape did not directly teach Harry what a hero wanted to know and learn in his teenage years, Snape did protect him and in the end, save his life. Despite the complicated past Snape had with Harry's parents, he knew that Lily Potter, whom he loved and cherished was more important a memory to uphold than all the pride he wanted to keep. Harry would never forget Snape, and we know that through his children, how he named one of them, and what he told them about Snape. Harry will always carry Snape's memory, and how he was saved by the man he would have never pegged to even care about him. That is, undoubtedly, a sign of a great teacher: one that leaves students with an impression that they will never forget, no matter how painful the road going there must have been, and no matter how deep the battle scars are from that fight. A great teacher is one who knows that sometimes, a student must learn lessons on his own. Though it may be easy to dictate what values to uphold or how to make the right choices, the real lessons taken to heart are from the mistakes one commits himself. The real way one grows is through experience.

I was able to take a peek into what Fully Booked is putting on sale in their Fort branch this week! I love book sales. I love the random books I find in them that always, for some reason, come in handy for future use. Whether I pick up a travel book that I use for a future trip, or a popular classics title that takes me weeks to finish, I always feel like I get more than my money's worth!

Some travel books are on sale for P50! Though they're not updated, I'm sure some tourist spots will always remain a must-see in big cities like London, Boston and New York.

From the epic sword fighting in Game of Thrones, to the young adult drama in Thirteen Reasons Why, to the intellect of Sherlock Holmes and the supernatural romance in, well, a LOT of children's titles, stories in any form or genre, are always a good companion for comfort. I had to share this with everyone; the list is so diverse!

ELY BUENDIA: MUSIC, LOVE

The purpose of this blog entry is to introduce Fully Booked music ambassador, muscian Ely Buendia.

I am enormous fan of Ely Buendia and his music, from the Eraserheads to The Mongols to Pupil. I must admit that I am particularly fond of Pupil and have a deep admiration for the other band members, including Wendell Garcia, who I believe to be one of the best drummers in Manila.

It was only natural for Fully Booked to approach Ely to be their music ambassador. He is a familiar figure in the store, and can often be found prowling the graphic novels section, the architecture section, and of course, the music section.

His upcoming workshop for Fully Booked entitled Aural X (click on the link for details) is original and unique, just like the musician who conceptualized it. Ten individuals will be selected to participate in a workshop and be closely guided by Ely Buendia into creating their own musical masterpieces with an iPad and the GarageBand application, and will involve everything from creating beats to recording and engineering the music to the lyrics of the song!

How does Ely Buendia come up with ultra catchy songs? What made him want to make music—and

stick with it? Fully Booked sits down with one of the country’s biggest rock stars, and find out what

makes him tick

Ely Buendia’s love for music started out, like most of us, in childhood. “I started learning how to write songs very early on when I was still in grade school,” the musician says. “My hobby was to invent verses and melodies for songs I only knew a couple of lines from and sing them in front of class.” It is from this semi-composing, this amateur inventing of words and tunes that one of the country’s most respected musicians found his voice, his niche. He took inspiration in pop culture, first mimicking bands that he looked up to, later moving on to make music that was wholly his own. “When I became a teenager I mimicked the songs of bands like the Cure, (David Bowie) and the Smiths,” he says. “I credit my penchant for unpredictability to those artists.”

These two bands, along with The Beatles, were what pushed him to make music then. Now, he says that his influences have changed to bands “whose works aren’t that popular” but have “lasting power.”

Media exposure—TV, magazines, radio made him see that it was possible to live a life dedicated to his passion of making music. “Watching bands on MTV made me want to be in a band,” he says. You can imagine this being at the back of his mind when he entered college and began forming bands, though the one that would make his name a by-word in Philippine music was his third outfit, making true rock stars out of him and the rest of the Eraserheads. Buendia began making music at a time just before Pinoy rock was about to rise once again. He had no way of knowing that his band would be instrumental in the country’s embracing of original Filipino rock music, nor that he would be at the forefront of the movement until today. Back then he was just a kid who loved music enough to want to make some himself. He says that it was “sheer ignorance” that pushed him to form a band and play at clubs and school programs instead of doing something more sensible like, say, studying.

“My biggest challenge was overcoming biases. Every artist’s innate fear of being typecast is both a gift and a curse,” he says. Buendia has defied the preconceptions that have formed around him by always doing his own thing. The only true constant in his life is his freedom to make music.

Buendia has always had a knack for writing music that speaks directly to the Filipino experience, and has done so without being self-conscious. When asked about this, he demurs, “I come from a provincial background where everything is still steeped in tradition, and there’s a strong communal identity, but I’m a city boy at heart. I only write about the things I’ve done and seen in the streets. I don’t know if that has anything to do with the Filipino psyche.”

Here we come to the crux of the matter. To paraphrase a well-known saying, there is no I in band. Everything, from the name to the finished songs on an award-winning album, is the product of different minds at work together. At times, it can get tough. “Usually writing a song with a partner yields awesome results. See Lennon/McCartney, Morrisey/Marr. But it’s a double-edged sword. Sometimes it’s just more practical and liberating to do things on your own. I still can’t make up my mind about it. This has given me more than my own share of headaches.”

But find the right people, like Buendia has in his band Pupil, and working together can be the sweetest thing in the world. As Buendia puts it, “The best part is the collaborative process. The worst part is the collaborative process.”

Buendia’s songwriting process is deceptively simple, yet you wouldn’t think so to hear his compositions. They’re ingeniously complex, yet catchy enough to be radio-friendly and perfect for a drunken sing along. “There are several possible catalysts: a good song I want to emulate or top, an awesome title, a phrase I pick up from reading, a genre I want to dabble in or adopt, a strong guitar riff, a melody I suddenly hear in my head. Once I have that, the biggest obstacle for me is the lyrics. When all else fails I use the loop trick where I record a rough demo of the music without lyrics and play it over and over. Your mind will eventually fill in the blanks. I use this trick as a last resort, though,” he says. “Usually an idea arrives in my head when I’m driving or on a long trip. Almost all my songs started out this way.”

Has he ever suffered from writer’s block? “I don’t believe I have ever experienced mental block, just bouts of depression, in which case your work is greatly affected. How do you get past depression? Eat! Kidding. I believe that is for a different workshop altogether.” Two things that genuinely put him in a good mood are “perusing modern architecture wherever I can find it and watching comedies withmy kids.”

All this, one imagines, feeds into his songwriting process and his performances. It is interesting to note that until now, going onstage is still a magical experience for Buendia in which he carefully grants a reveal of his soul. “It’s a combination of nerves and anticipation and adrenaline. I guess going onstage is like bungee jumping or confession (both of which I have not tried) where you ego splits in two and only the strongest triumphs,” he says, adding that what he loves about it is, “The immediacy, the sense that everything can fall apart any second, the ultimate high when everything goes right.”

Songwriting, he believes, is both a product of talent and perseverance. “I believe we are born with a set of specific talents but I also believe things can be learned, as long as one is passionate enough about them,” he says. “There’s so much talent out there it’s astonishing.”

Between the digital tools that are at the disposal of the current generation and the digital distribution technologies of the Internet, it’s a lot easier to get a band started. However, that doesn’t mean it’s any easier to get to the top, let alone stay there. Among the many things that Buendia aims to impart in his upcoming workshop for Fully Booked is to guide students through the songwriting process from genesis to completion, and most importantly, to help them acquire the ability to work under pressure. “The chance to challenge myself and others,” is what excites Buendia the most about helming this first-ofits-kind workshop in Fully Booked. “[Students] will learn that making music has nothing to do with real life. This will benefit them immensely.”

Music is still very much a part of Buendia’s life, both professionally and personally. You cannot separate the music from the man. “We [Pupil] just did a an Eheads themed show in the States, and we’re gearing up for the release of the second single from the Limiters of the Infinity Pool album, “20/20” the music video for which we shot in the middle of EDSA. I’m also pretty excited about the vinyl version of Limiters,” he says. And for a man who loves music so much he figured out a way to spend his lifetime playing it, teaching others to do so is but the next logical step in his life’s ode.

"A Picture Speaks Volumes": Favorite Book Illustrators

There is nothing as satisfying as coming across a superb illustration, especially in a book that is composed mostly of pages devoted to just words.

What exactly makes a good book illustration? To me, its not really how aesthetically pleasing it is, but rather how well it brings the story to life. A book's cover image, for instance, can set the tone of the entire story, and even if there are no other images in the book, the reader has that single image to hold on to all throughout. Sometimes even the most simple images are effective at conveying the story's message.

This blog entry is dedicated to my favorite book illustrators! Here they are, in no particular order:

1. Edward Gorey (1925-2000)
Edward Gorey was a writer as well as an illustrator. He is best known for books like The Curious Sofa, The Haunted Tea-Cosy: A Dispirited and Distasteful Diversion for Christmas, and The Gilded Bat (Click on the links to see the book covers). Many of his stories have been republished as compilations (i.e. Amphigorey, Amphigorey Too, etc.).

His artwork is very detailed, and if you notice, borders on the eery and macabre. His use of color is spare, if any at all, but that's what makes his work so striking, and his attention to detail is amazing.

He partnered with one of my favorite authors, John Bellairs (Alas! Also gone from this world) to create a series of gothic tales for children. My favorite of these is a book called The House with a Clock in its Walls. Gorey's style went well with the creepy story of a clock hidden within a house in the town of New Zebedee, by the extremely evil Isaac Izaard—its chimes were meant to herald the end of the world. An ordinary boy—a roly-poly scaredy cat by the name of Lewis Barnavelt is tasked to thwart the doomsday clock and the beyond-the-grave meddling of Isaac Izaard's equally evil wife.

Looking at his drawings for this book always leaves me feeling cold—literally. Its a delicious feeling that adds to the suspense and picks up on the atmosphere of New Zebedee, which is located in Michigan (known for its freezing winters).

2. Arthur Rackham (1867-1939)
An English bloke who is considered one of the finest and most prolific book illustrators in history, Rackham was known for his intricate renditions of supernatural folk and fairytale characters. His work—a combination of pencil, india ink, and watercolor—has become the stuff of legend, and has inspired many contemporary works of art in all media. For example, Wikipedia states that Guilermo del Toro, director of the Academy-award-winning Spanish fantasy, Pan's Labyrinth, was heavily influenced by Rackham in the conceptualization and design of one of the film's main characters, The Faun.

As a kid, I remember seeing Rackham's illustrations gracing the pages of my book of favorite fairy tales by the Brothers Grimm. My mom passed this book down to me (I can't seem to find it. I suspect it's buried beneath tons of cartons). I can't find an exact photo of that particular edition (Sorry). Here are some of my favorite illustrations done by Arthur Rackham from that collection of tales:

3. Quentin Blake (1932-Present)
One of my all-time favorite authors is Roald Dahl. I love all his books whether for adults or children. I have to say that the illustrations played a big part in my being such a big fan. Quentin Blake, another Englishman, is the genius behind nearly all of the illustrations for Roald Dahl's books. In fact, the Roald Dahl website features his artwork. This guy is so good he was awarded the Hans Christian Andersen Medal for his work as a book illustrator.

The BFG, short for Big friendly Giant, is one of my favorite Roald Dahl books. Its about a giant whose sole pleasure in life is giving children good dreams. A little girl named Sophie espies him in the act of doing this and so he picks her up and takes her to his homeland. Unbeknownst to Sophie there are other giants who live in Giant Country, and these want nothing else but to gobble up humans, who they refer to as "Human Beans." What follows is an extraordinary adventure that involves helicopters and the Queen of England!

Another book I love is The Twits, the story of a gruesome, smelly twosome who have a penchant for bird pie, scaring kids, and tormenting each other with cruel practical jokes even if they are husband and wife! In the illustration below, in order to payback her husband for the nasty trick he played on her, Mrs. Twit serves up a dish of WORM spaghetti!

4. Georgina Hargreaves (1939-Present)
Georgina Hargreaves was one of the illustrators for several of Enid Blyton's books. Born in Lancashire, Georgina studied art in the Bolton Art School. Her style is quite distinct and is very appealing to children. Her drawings exude a warmth and innocence so vital to the characters that populate Blyton's enchanting tales.

Her illustrations for the Magic Faraway Tree edition first published in 1939 are really wonderful, and will delight anybody who is familiar with Enid Blyton's tale of three children who discover a magical tree that takes them to fantastical lands. I will never forget her illustration of "boiled sweets" growing from bushes in clusters, the Land of Goodies!

5. Daniel Egneus
Daniel Egneus is one of the more contemporary artists I favor. He's done campaigns for big names like H&M and Haagen Dasz, among others, and was elected Best Illustrator by the Association of Illustrators in the UK in 2005.

I really enjoyed the illustrations he did for Little Red Riding Hood, published by Harper Collins. They are really beautiful.

This post is about the recipient for the non-fiction category of the 2010 National Book Awards: Just Kids by Patti Smith, one of the most moving books I've ever had the pleasure of reading.

The deckle-edged edition is soon to be available at Fully Booked. Even if I own the hardcover already, I will definitely buy the deckle-edged version (the cover has a great photo of Patti Smith and Robert Mapplethorpe; the back has a photo of them locking lips) as I really love the feel of the uneven pages.

For those who aren't familiar with Patti Smith, here's a brief background: Smith is an American musician who is also known for her poetry, activism, and work as a visual artist. Furthermore, she is also known as one of punk rock's pioneers and is considered a style icon of the 70s. Aside from her recent win at the National Book Awards, Smith is recognized as Commander of the Order des Artes et des Letteres, a title bestowed on her by the French Minister of Culture in 2005. She was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2007, and is also a recipient of the 2011 Polar Music Prize.

Just Kids is a memoir of life with her dearest friend and soulmate Robert Mapplethorpe, one of the most influential photographers of his generation.

In all honesty, I'm no lover of poetry though I do admire the work of certain poets like Ted Hughes and E.E. Cummings. I was a little hesitant to read this book—I wasn't sure if it was one of those books that told a story purely through poetry, but my desire to learn more about the enigmatic Patti Smith (being a fan of her music and art) overcame my fear of not being able to relate. I am so glad I made that choice.

The book does not consist solely of poems though there are a few, but it felt like a string of beautiful verses, seamlessly overlapping. Patti Smith writes with a fluidity and grace that is close to lyrical. She speaks of her relationship with Robert Mapplethorpe with such profundity and reverence. They seemed destined for each other; I believe it was much more than coincidence the first time they laid eyes on each other, and how he would later on save her from an unpleasant experience.

I am awestruck that two people could have such a strong connection, and how their love transcended the physical, evolving into something so pure. (I am deliberately being vague as I don't want to deprive anyone of reading this wonderful story)

The book corrected many misconceptions I had of Patti Smith. I initially thought that she was a harsh woman whose life was marked by vice—it doesn't help that she's reed thin and looked haggard even at a young age, or that she was part of a generation that lost many to AIDS or addiction. A large part of her life was spent surviving poverty and starvation, and through all this she maintained such a great outlook and a constant determination to improve her artistry and her relationships with the people around her. It baffles me how someone could have gone through so much suffering and emerged victorious. She is a Renaissance woman in every aspect. I also love the fact that she worked in a bookstore (Scribner's Bookstore).

Just Kids also recalls an era so steeped in creativity, originality, and raw talent—New York in the 60s and 70s. In its pages are Andy Warhol, Salvador Dali, members of the 27 Club (group of musicians who all died at age 27): Janis Joplin, Jim Morrison, Jimi Hendrix, and the famed Hotel Chelsea, where many staggering works of genius were created, not to mention the death of many famous personalities, including the tragic death of longtime girlfriend of Sex Pistols bassist Sid Vicious, supposedly by his hand.

Patti Smith's writing is admirable. Smith manages to speak of how they (she and Robert) emerged as these larger-than-life creatures—respected and revered as two of the most gifted creative trailblazers of their generation—without an ounce of conceit or self-consciousness.

The book had many painful moments, but I couldn't put it down. I finished it in one evening, and when I finally closed it and set it down, it felt like I was saying goodbye to a person and not merely finishing a book.

Patti Smith promised Robert Mapplethorpe she would write their story. She has done so much more than that, and has revived his spirit and the spirit of a lost generation with the gift of her words.

Snippets from The 2011 Junior Book Crew Part 2

As per my blog entry on May 18, here is my promised follow up entry to the reviews created by the 2011 batch of the Junior Book Crew.

To reiterate: "the Fully Booked Zine's editor-in-chief gave several of them an exercise, which had to do with being able to write with integrity and honesty, and being able to find something positive in a book that they would not ordinarily pick up from the shelves. They were instructed to be as truthful as possible. The idea was to choose something from their favorite genre, but on a topic they weren't too fond of."
Expect a lot of honesty from this batch of reviews.

Funnily enough, my favorite one is a review on one of the Pippi Longstocking books by Astrid Lingren. I adore Pippi Longstocking, so why then do I say "funnily enough?"

Well, the reviewer didn't feel the same way. In fact, I could say the reviewer loathes Pippi as much as I love her! Nonetheless "Adrena Lynn's" review was so well-written and so honest that it made me laugh until my sides ached! Since Adrena used a pen name, I will keep her identity secret. Here it is in all its glorious candor:

The next review is by Kirstein Gail Sese, also known as Spring. Spring was not familiar with Tintin until the day she was asked to review Tintin in Tibet by Herge and although she loves children's books she isn't too fond of adventure stories. (Speaking of Tintin, I can't wait for the film adaptation of Secret of the Unicorn, which is supposed to come out in December 2011)

Spring's essay was very brief, but that isn't to say that it didn't effectively convey how she truly felt about the book. Her review is an example of concise writing. Straight to the point, without frills, but well-written. If you think about it, dailies and publications like Time and Newsweek employ the same kind of writing. They get straight to the point and avoid "unnecessary" details, which lead readers far away from the actual point. Well done, Spring!

The next review is on a compilation of one of my favorite authors Edgar Allan Poe. This review is by Jamiya Doreen Umali (age 15), called Jamie by her friends and family. The editor of the Fully Booked Zine told me that she was pleased to discover that Jamie loves reading classics.

Actually, Jamie is the only one of eight who participated in this writing exercise who professed a love for classic literature. She cited Jane Austen as one of her favorites and horror as one of her least favorite genres. Jamie gamely agreed to read chilling tales written by one of the greatest masters of the macabre, and came up with this essay. For someone who said she didn't really like the horror genre, her essay show that her love for literature and open mind are far greater than her distaste for the genre.

The last review is by Daniel Gabriel (age 16). Daniel is a movie buff, but isn't much of a science fiction lover so he was assigned to review the Star Trek Encyclopedia.

Here is his review, which very neatly points out the longstanding rivalry between Star Trek and Star Wars--even if he's not a fan to begin with, he makes a commendable effort to inform readers on the merits of the book, and why it will appeal to fans and newbies alike. Bravo, Daniel!

THE RING COULD CHOOSE YOU...

Today is the day the highly anticipated Green Lantern movie begins screening in Philippine theaters! Although I'm not a hardcore Green Lantern fan, seeing the trailer made me decide that this is one movie I'm not going to miss. The special effects look great, and I've always found Ryan Reynolds cool, beginning when I first "really" noticed him as George Lutz in the Amityville Horror remake in 2005 (I didn't like that movie much though).

Pretty cool, huh? All you have to do is buy ANY DC Comics Graphic novel, and you're entitled to a raffle stub for a chance to win an awesome Green Lantern t-shirt or poster! Here are the complete mechanics:

Basically, the movie centers on Hal Jordan, who is the second Green Lantern. Alan Scott was first. Before Ryan Reynolds was CHOSEN, there were a couple of Hal Jordan wannabes up for the role, and one of these was Justin Timberlake. I never thought he would be a good actor until I saw The Social Network where he plays bad boy Napster mastermind Sean Parker. Some people joked that maybe he was good because he was actually playing himself though I suspended all judgement since I don't know the guy personally.

Jared Leto was also a contender and so was Brian Austin Green (you probably remember him from Beverly Hills 90210). Green is actually a genuine Green Lantern fan.

I think Ryan Reynolds is a pretty close match though so is Brian Austin Green in terms of looks (a mask does wonders). However, Green's geeky voice as David Silver in Beverly Hills 90210 is sending alarm signals to my brain. Hopefully, they made the right choice as some hardcore fans out there will be shaking their fists at the injustice of it all. (This is how I felt when they cast Charlize Theron as Aeon Flux. I think she's awesome but for me she just wasn't Aeon Flux material. I was rooting for Famke Janssen! Arg.)

Something else worth knowing is that Geoff Johns, the writer behind several Green Lantern graphic novels (he's done The Flash too) like Green Lantern: Blackest Night and Green Lantern Corps: Recharge is credited as a creative consultant for the Green Lantern movie. This makes me actually want to watch the film all the more as I'm certain that having him on board seals the deal in terms of loyalty to the whole Green Lantern concept.

Another thing I didn't know is that Supe (a.k.a. the Man of Steel) was suppose to make a small appearance. They sliced him out—scared he would steal the show.

Quentin Tarantino (Pulp Fiction, Kill Bill, Reservoir Dogs) was considered for direction (I wonder how true that is though). I am so curious how that would've panned out though I really loved Casino Royale so "Go, Martin Campbell!"

I am currently reading Green Lantern: Agent Orange, which is pretty much the prequel to Blackest Night. So far, it seems pretty good, but since I haven't finished it yet, I'll have to form a concrete opinion after I'm done. It basically revolves around ol' Hal looking for the Orange Lantern. Something I can definitely say is that Philip Tan did a bang-up job. Awesome stuff!

Gonna catch this movie soon! Let me know what you guys think when you're through watching it. I'm especially curious how Green Lantern fans will feel. Happy long weekend everyone!

The 2011 Junior Book Crew graduated just this Monday. It is a pity I never got to meet any of them though I am proud to have read some of their very wonderful compositions. The Fully Booked Zine's editor-in-chief gave several of them an exercise, which had to do with being able to write with integrity and honesty, and being able to find something positive in a book that they would not ordinarily pick up from the shelves. They were instructed to be as truthful as possible.

The idea was to choose something from their favorite genre, but on a topic they weren't too fond of.

Read on, folks! For somebody who says she doesn't like mysteries, she sure gave me a pleasant surprise!

The editor-in-chief of the zine was particularly pleased with this essay done by Mikki Yam (age 13), who professed a love for the music section and Justin Bieber. She was given a book on Tori Amos (who couldn't be any further from Justin Bieber), a singer she had never heard of, entitled, Tori Amos: The Authorized Biography: All These Years by Kalen Rogers. She was pleased that Mikki was actually open to discovering a new artist, and that she actually "sorta liked" Tori Amos.

To be fair to Mikki, she was allowed to listen to one song of this artist before writing her essay.

The next essay is also music-related. It is written by Elias "Miguel" Pascual (age 16). Miguel loves indie music, and he's definitely no Bieber fan. Miguel was fortunate that we had just run out of stock of Bieber-related reading material, and so our editor decided to give him a book on Lady Gaga, entitled Lady Gaga: Queen of Pop.

Miguel's piece was undoubtedly sincere, displaying a true love for music, and he has quite a way with words.

Sign up for the Fully Booked 2011 Film Language and Grammar Classes, organized by director Lyle Sacris and moderated by Jozza Palaganas. This series of talks tackles everything from basic film appreciation to post-production to acting, with industry notables as guest speakers and moderators.

The purpose of this blog entry is to introduce Fully Booked film ambassador, director Lyle Sacris.

Why a film ambassador when Fully Booked is a bookstore? Think about it. Fully Booked has a film section and carries DVDs (as well as CDs). Fully Booked also has U-View, a 62-seater theater in the flagship branch in Bonifacio High Street. Fully Booked also describes itself as "...a shop that brews inspiration. With a cozy atmosphere and a well-informed staff, Fully Booked is not merely a bookshop but a lifestyle destination."

There are many stories to be lived out. Lyle Sacris's story is an interesting one, and is one of film in both the advertising and cinematic aspect.

Film, as an important aspect of culture, is something that Fully Booked would like to highlight for the months of April to June 2011, and most especially the significance and potential of Philippine Cinema. Watch out for a barrage of exciting film-related classes and activities!

Lyle Sacris has long been a much valued customer of Fully Booked. I've been a longtime fan of his, and have had the opportunity to meet him on two occasions. He is an awesome dude who drives a Harley and he just adores books. I've spotted him many times skulking in the film and children's sections of the stores, while myself skulking in the store's various sections. Spotting his unconventional hairstyle and warm, friendly smile always puts me in a good mood.

His parents wanted Lyle Sacris to be a doctor. He really wanted to be a photographer. Terry Gilliam changed all their minds

“Nothing beats God’s lighting rig.” We are, Lyle Sacris and myself, talking about his philosophies as a cinematographer, and I’ve asked him, out of curiosity, what his stance on available light is. Lyle is, of course, talking about the good ol’ sun, the HMI of HMIs, such as it were. “After all, natural light is what every cinematographer goes to all the trouble of simulating artificially.” Not to say that Lyle is himself above going to all that trouble. He has, in fact, developed a rather unorthodox madness to his method. “I ask for two, three hours from the director to light the set. I consider the entire area, all the angles of coverage, all the scenes. After I’m done, you don’t have to move the lights anymore every time you change a shot. It actually makes shoots go faster.” It’s a process that factors in time and budget and entails much rigor and science, drawing, as it does, not only from Lyle’s film school tutelage, but from his days of putting in pre-med college toil. That’s no typo. Medical practice really was what lay at the end of his educational path.

The mental image of Lyle Sacris as a doctor doesn’t cohere easy, not even if you think of it as a prank or some wild alternate world scenario, both of which it isn’t, coming this close to finishing up as real world fact. Much as it was at the behest of his parents, Lyle wasn’t exactly disgruntled about becoming a doctor, but he did have this niggling infatuation with capturing images and making them mean something, an art gland, if you will, starved of nutrients and spoiling for discharge, breathing down his neck. This is what usually happens when you stray off your right track. And then he stumbled onto three movies, three very disparate movies at that. And got assaulted thrice by epiphany. After which, he didn’t want to be a photographer anymore.

Terry Gilliam’s urban dystopia Brazil showed Lyle how far you could push the envelope of moviemaking. Peque Gallaga’s lavish period saga Oro Plata Mata showed him how far you could push the envelope of local moviemaking. But Luis Bunuel and Salvador Dali’s surrealist hand grenade Un Chien Andalou showed him you could actually set fire to the envelope and make a film from the cinders, and what had been a dormant strain of avant garde in his blood emerged in heat. This last was what Lyle wanted to do. Set fire on everything and film the conflagration. These films and the volatile paradigm shifts they set into motion, this became the collective map by which he got here. The burgeoning doctor inside him didn’t have a prayer, falling into the cracks and dying a messy death. 

I admit to having never seen Lyle’s first two major studio features, outside of random half-remembered fragments on cable. And I’m not sure he wants me to either. I do know that one is a rom-com and the other had the Viva Hot Babes in it, and that both hardly qualify as mortal locks for the experimentalism Lyle was leaning towards. I know, too, that like most films wrung through the local studio system, not all of Lyle was up there on the films. A degree of anonymity and a truckload of compromise are such givens of working in the mainstream that they’re not caveats anymore but a territorial imperative almost. And it’s not as if Lyle was oblivious of this. But much as it didn’t exactly disillusion him, the experience still disheartened him enough that a self-imposed exile in the States and a swearing off filmmaking seemed, at that time, the only salve. But life, as the cliché goes, had other plans. And his filmmaking jones was not about to go quietly into the night. After a serendipitous bumping into with independent filmmaker friends Keith Sicat and Sari Dalena, at that time thick into making what would be their revered feature Rigodon. And before long, Lyle was back in the production grind, helping them finish their film, pulsing the endorphin rush. It was enough vitamin and propellant to make him go back home and back to filmmaking. But this time he wore a new hat. His first work as a cinematographer was on Erik Matti’s sprawling fantasy Exodus. He knew enough to ally himself with friends. Since then he’s felt no need to exile himself again. It was also Erik who gave him a taste of what it was like to make commercials.

“If I can make a living from music videos, or better yet, from making the kind of films I want to make, which are not necessarily commercial, if I can make a living from art, why not?  But we’re not in Hollywood. And in the Philippines, advertising is where you can do that.” Lyle harbors no illusions about his advertising career. He understands that directing commercials is a function of craft, not of art. That it’s a living, not a calling. That the client is king, and there is no room for auteurs, and that to maintain his sanity, he needs to separate one from the other. It’s the sort of wisdom that only someone who has managed to cross over from one opponent discipline to the other with ease and balance can receive and impart. It’s difficult enough as it is for anyone to break into commercials. And he’s not reckless enough to squander the gift. “There are a lot of people with a lot of talent out there but talent isn’t enough, or at least is not the most important virtue. Above all else, you must have a very sound work ethic. Of course, a little luck goes a long way.”  And without being falsely humble, Lyle feels that luck played more of a part than anything else in his crossing over. You could trace it all back, he says, to how two of his early, and best, commercials─Riles and Habagat─received a tsunami of industry awards here and abroad, effectively boosting his cred, cementing his rep and putting him on the map. He’s since settled comfortably into the contours of his new career.

Not that he’s turned his back on film and on making. His last film was a 5-minute segment for Jon Red’s omnibus project Imahe Nasyon back in 2006, and he knows he has a few longer films in him. There’s one script by a friend that he wants to turn into a feature and almost shot a couple of years back. He promises to return to it someday soon. Right now what he’s fiddling with and trying to finish is a short, slightly surreal and very funny one that would double as viral ad for his store, Sputnik. He’s also been teaching film at his alma mater. “Sometimes, you give someone total freedom and they get lost but put them in a box and they find themselves.”  The box he put his students in, the box he’s proud enough to call his baby, is an exercise involving a common script, without the mandatory qualifiers and descriptors, just words on a piece of paper, seemingly random, almost shapeless. These words are what his students make their thesis films from. He’s very pleased with the results. “No two films made were alike. There was a love story, a horror story, all from the same set of words. It’s amazing. Each and every one managed to find its own voice.”

One of his future plans is to parlay the exercise into a film contest for Fully Booked. “I’ve been an avid customer of theirs for a long time, and in fact, it was from one of the books I bought there that I got the inspiration for the exercise, but that’s not the reason I’m bringing it to them. Fully Booked, over the years, has become very supportive of independent filmmakers and independent filmmaking and local cinema in general. They’ve been holding film events at U-View for years. They’re not only very open to things like this, but they’re very serious and very enthusiastic about pursuing them.” The film contest, in fact, is just one of many activities in what Lyle calls an ongoing film campaign. On one hand, it’s an extension of his teaching, a giving back, a paying forward, not just to film students but to film enthusiasts, too, and to those who aren’t yet but have the potential and the desire to be. But ultimately it’s his way of staying in touch with his first love, with the very thing that made him quit his medical dreams. “The itch is still there. The commercials, they’re work. This isn’t. Goodbye, Miss Jones!

There are days when you wake up on the wrong side of the bed, and almost nothing can make the rest of the day right. Today, was not one of those days, but the first bit of news that came my way threw me off the path of what would have otherwise been a very pleasant Tuesday.

Diana Wynne Jones passed away just last Saturday at the age of 76. For those who don't know her, Ms. Jones was one of the greatest children's fantasy authors who ever lived. She is one of my favorite authors, and the news really saddened me a great deal. Of course, it isn't the same sort of sadness you experience losing someone you know and love like a family member, a good friend, or even a much-loved pet. In a way though, I feel as if I did know her for I loved all her books; her words have accompanied me from childhood to adulthood, almost as if she actually observed me grow from a nerdy and awkward teenager to a nerdy and awkward adult. (Okay. That was a vain attempt at being funny.) Her stories have brought tears to my eyes, elicited chuckles (and cackles) from my lips, and a brought about in me a real sense of wonder that somebody could actually possess that kind of boundless imagination and gift for words, which Ms. Jones judiciously employed to create such unforgettable characters and fantastical realms--all this while living in our mundane one.

I was ecstatic when another creative giant named Hayao Miyazaki adapted Ms. Jones's book, turning it into one of the greatest animated film features Howl's Moving Castle, which is pretty faithful to the original story. Everything about this film is stunning, and it does justice to the book.

I have always been partial to the heroines of Ms. Jones's books as they possess a combination of qualities that makes them so endearing. For instance, Sophie Hatter of Howl's Moving Castle possesses none of the frivolity and superficiality that is becoming quite common in the characters who populate today's books for young adults. She is intelligent, a bit clumsy, a neat freak, stubborn and willful, and manages to keep her charm despite being turned into an old woman by the spiteful Witch of the Waste, or even when she's standing up to two very powerful djinns (this latter bit is from the book Castle in the Air). Calcifer, the wise-cracking fire demon, is another one of my favorite characters (Billy Crystal did a bang-up job as his voice in the English version of the film! They couldn't have picked a better actor to give voice to cranky but lovable Calcifer)!

I guess what I'm trying to say is that none of Ms. Jones's characters are perfect. They inhabit magical realms so far from real life you could get lost in them for days (I have to admit I spent a few Summer vacations doing just that--my nose buried in her books for days at a time), but the characters are very real, so real that an ordinary girl like myself can relate. Oh the sheer genius of her characterization!

Ms. Jones was also adept at writing short stories. A favorite compilation of mine is a book entitled, Unexpected Magic. It was through this novel that I discovered that Ms. Jones was also gifted at writing sci-fi (Some will argue that fantasy and sci-fi go hand-in-hand, but that goes entirely beyond the point of this blog entry).

Diana Wynne Jones is also known for her Chrestomanci series, which is comprised of six novels: The Lives of Christopher Chant (1988), Conrad's Fate (2005), Charmed Life (1977), The Magicians of Caprona (1980), two short stories published in her novel Mixed Magics: "Stealer of Souls" and "Carol Oneir's Hundredth Dream," The Pinhoe Egg (2006), among others. The series basically revolves around powerful enchanters called the Chrestomancis. These enchanters have nine lives and are responsible for safeguarding the well-being of a couple of "parallel universes."

Ms. Jones's books are must-reads for fans of wizardry, magic, dry humor, and the power of true love, which is not at all sappy as far as Ms. Jones's books go. Fans of Harry Potter will lover her books. In fact, you could say she is one of J.K. Rowling's predecessors. Diana was also an Englishwoman. She started writing about magic and wizardry earlier than J.K. Rowling--the late 1970s, to be specific.

It was a good friend of mine who brought me to my senses earlier. We were chatting on YM, and I was telling him Diana Wynne Jones passed away from a long battle with cancer. He commiserated being somewhat of a fan himself. He sympathized and told me that I shouldn't feel so bad as she's gone to the beautiful world beyond. Refusing to be comforted I answered that its a pity she's no longer alive to write about her experience. He answered: "What are you babbling about!? She already has!"

A Pre-Oscar Film Fest at Fully Booked

I can't think of a better way to spend the weekend or a weeknight with friends or family than to catch a classic film in a movie theater. I haven't done this in a while. It seems so much easier to pop a DVD in the player, but in all honesty, nothing beats watching films in a movie theater. In fact, this is exactly what I plan to do on the last week of February 2011.

I'm no expert, but I do appreciate films with interesting plot twists, great acting, and exceptional cinematography, and I am especially interested in the films that were made before I was born. As my grandfather puts it when he sees most new films: "They just don't make actors like they used to." I know it sounds a little biased, considering how many gifted actors there are today, but I suppose living up to the legends that are Charlton Heston or Marlon Brando would faze anyone, regardless of talent. And there is no way I would tell my grandfather otherwise since I love him to pieces plus, he'll give me a lecture I won't forget. As I was saying before my grandfather interrupted, I'm in for a movie marathon to end all movie marathons this Feb 24-27, 2011. I plan to watch at least one awesome classic a day, and the good news is: so can you!

In anticipation for the 83rd Academy Awards, Fully Booked is holding a Pre-Oscar Film Fest in U-View, its 62-seater theater, located at the Basement level of the Bonifacio High Street branch on February 24-28, 2011. Four classic films, all past Oscar winners and nominees for one category or the other, will be shown beginning Thursday (February 24). The best part (besides the awesome lineup) is that its absolutely free of charge!

First up is 1959's Ben-Hur, which stars the great Charlton Heston as Judah Ben-Hur. This is a film adaptation of the book Ben-Hur: A Tale of the Christ by Lew Wallace. This film went on to win a grand total of 11 Academy Awards (a first in Oscar history), including Best Leading Actor and Best Supporting Actor (another first), Best Motion Picture, Best Cinematography (color).

I was quite young when I watched this film. What I can remember clearly is the chariot race scene where Messala gets trampled by the horses (My dad tried to cover my eyes during this scene. He failed.). I'm definitely going to watch this again because I'm sure it will make more sense to me now that I'm older, and I'll be able to appreciate the many reasons this is considered the stuff of film legend.

Next is Its a Wonderful Life, a wonderful movie directed by Frank Capra in 1946, starring James Stewart and Donna Reed. The film is based on the short story "The Greatest Gift," penned by Philip Van Doren Stern.

Though Its a Wonderful Life never won any awards, it was nominated and dubbed by the American Film Institute as the number one most inspirational American film of all time. Here is the trailer:

I've never seen this film, but my grandfather loves this movie. I've made up my mind to bring him along when I watch this. He says that this is probably the most moving film he has ever seen. I guess this is what started him on his fascination for angel films. He loved Powder (My grandfather and I are convinced to this day that Powder is an angel. I think it was the final scene that did it.), but thinks John Travolta played his most annoying role yet in Michael, which had a lot of American religious groups─and my grandfather─up in arms.

Third on the list is On the Waterfront, a 1954 film directed by Elia Kazan starring the great Marlon Brando (one of my favorite actors). This film won a total of eight Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Director, and of course, Best Actor.

I've always enjoyed mobster flicks. From Godfather I and II (I disliked III to be honest) to Goodfellas to The Untouchables and even Married to the Mob where Michelle Pfeiffer plays the widow of a mafioso with an FBI agent and a mafia boss both competing for her affections. I've never seen On the Waterfront, but I'd be a fool to pass up this opportunity to catch Marlon Brando not as the kingpin I'm accustomed to) but as an average bloke named Terry Malloy, who decides to stand up to the mob boss (played by Lee J. Cobb).

This film definitely calls for parental supervision due to pretty bloody scenes. Here is the screening schedule:

And last but certainly not least on the list is the original True Grit, a 1969 Western with John Wayne as the eye-patched U.S. Marshal Reuben Rooster J. Cogburn who helps young Mattie Ross avenge the murder of her father. In one of the scenes Mattie addresses Rooster Cogburn: "They tell me you're a man with true grit," and thus the title. Robert Duvall and Dennis Hopper have roles in the film as gang leader Ned Pepper and a horse thief named Moon, respectively. John Wayne won the Academy Award for Best Actor (and a Golden Globe).

The 2010 remake by the Coen brothers (Big Lebowski, Fargo, and No Country for Old Men) has been nominated for no less than 10 Academy Awards for the upcoming 83rd Oscars. Jeff Bridges (who plays the dude in Big Lebowski, go figure) plays Rooster J. Cogburn and Hailee Steinfeld plays Mattie Ross. (This role earned her a nomination for Best Supporting Actress) The film also features Matt Damon as Texas Ranger La Boeuf, who aids Mattie and Cogburn. Here is the 2010 trailer, featuring Johnny Cash's version of the traditional American folk anthem "God's Gonna Cut You Down":

"WHITE: A PHILIPPA GREGORY ESSAY CONTEST: WINNING ENTRY ANNOUNCEMENT"

Congratulations to Dorothy Bangayan Lee, winner of "White: A Philippa Gregory Essay Contest!"

After thorough deliberation, the U.S. editorial team of Simon & Schuster, publisher of Philippa Gregory's novels, contacted Fully Booked to announce the winning entry. This will be published in the February-March 2011 issue of the Fully Booked Zine.

Apparently, according to a Simon & Schuster editor, Philippa Gregory was informed about the contest, and although she did not take an active role in the judging, she did view the entries and had this to say:

"I was impressed by the thoughtfulness of their reading and touched by their affection for my novels."

Indeed, though I too was not part of the judging process, I feel privileged to have been allowed to read the wonderful entries that the contestants submitted. In just 500 words, all of them displayed a true passion for the historical fiction genre and the works of Philippa Gregory. It was quite heartwarming to read who their favorite Tudor heroine is and why, as most professed a strong, very sincere affinity to their character of choice.

I myself am a fan of historical fiction, and were I to have joined this essay contest, I would have chosen to write about Mary Boleyn, sister to Anne Boleyn, and predecessor to King Henry VIII's affections. After risking her husband's ire for the favors of the king, she was cast aside by the monarch for her sister Anne. Her children, supposedly by Henry VIII, were never recognized by their royal sire. Sure enough her first marriage failed due to her "indiscretion," and her second marriage to a mere soldier so angered her sister Anne—who was already queen by then—that she banished Mary from her court. Sad to say, this same sister met a worse fate: she was beheaded on account of high treason, among other things. Once again, another woman had caught Henry VIII's fancy.

It never fails to amaze me how ultimately tragic the Tudor period was for many women in the royal court; how love was deemed insignificant in comparison to ambition, stature, and power. We are fortunate that the climate for true romance in the present day is much more favorable than it was centuries ago, and that in most (but not all) cases, a marriage of convenience is more one of choice than a non-negotiable. More importantly, that a hangman's noose or an executioner's axe do not await us should our spouses "tire" of us or should we choose to follow our heart and dreams and not fulfill somebody else's lofty ambitions.

The Simon & Schuster editorial team also named two exceptional entries, and although there is only one winner, I will share these entries with you readers here. Both essayists are fans of Catherine of Aragon:

My Own Little Costume Party

To quote Katherine Howard, “Now let me see, what do I have?”

But other than count clothes or jewels, I count books. They are indeed the greatest treasures you can find. A book lets you be in different places at once. It lets you meet different characters from this world or another. In other words, it's your own time traveling machine. When I tell my friends I’m fascinated with period books and movies, they huff and puff and say, “Didn’t you have this in History class?” They refer this kind of literature and films as “costume party” (since they dress differently from what people wear now). But to me, different means "elegant" and "romantic" when it comes to period pieces.

They say that first love never dies, and I am a firm believer. I admire Queen Katherine of Aragon above all because she had King Henry when he was still a boy and still growing up. It’s safe to say she had him at his worst. She became his older sister, his mother, and his wife all at the same time. I attribute this to the fact that she understood him more than the rest because she was there in his formative years. She saw him transform from a boy to a man, and she endured and catered to the tantrums and demands of a young king. Nowadays, it is so rare to find a wife still faithful to her husband when he is upfront being unfaithful. She held on to her faith like a lifeline. Until her last breath she fought for her right to the throne, her right to see her daughter, and she fought for her love of the king. Her undying faith and love for her sovereign made her the hero, especially to her daughter Mary who followed in her footsteps—a devout catholic and a god-fearing lady despite the fact that they were separated by King Henry until the queen’s death. She is indeed a good mother, lover, and above all, a great queen to a fickle king. And she was lucky, if not for her trials with King Henry VIII, she lived in a time of magnificence, richness, and boldness, where elegance came naturally, unenhanced by technology; when life was simple and yet extravagant. And yet, with the changes we experience in our fast-paced world, only the emotions, especially love, remain unchanged.

The difference between History and Historical fiction is tantamount to differentiating "just seeing" and "experiencing." Historical fiction not only teaches you about the past and how it affects the present, it also allows you to experience the feeling in a time and place so long ago, it becomes otherworldly and unimaginable even if it really did exist—only to find out that the clothes and way of speaking may have changed, but the feeling didn’t.

Now let me see, what do I have? Oh yeah, my love for books, traveling, and experiencing.

My friends tend to smirk at me every time I tell them that my favorite author is Philippa Gregory. Besides the fact that it is NOT Twilight, historical fiction has never been a popular choice among my age group. No sane person loves hearing about what happened centuries ago. You can even count with your fingers the students who listen to their History teacher without dozing off.

And yes, I was one of those students. I was hypnotized, enthralled, and mesmerized by facts and momentous events shared by my favorite teacher in high school. I always wondered what it would be like to live in an era where Facebook and Twitter don’t exist, where people took pleasure in throwing endless feasts for a grandiose celebration in the company of the royal family. I fantasized transporting to the 16th Century, sharing a laugh with King Henry VIII and his second wife Anne Boleyn. I wanted to see Elizabeth I as a young girl and watch her grow up as the greatest monarch England has ever seen.

Reading Philippa Gregory’s novels made me live that dream. Every page is a detailed description of the lives of these kings and queens; their physical attributes, clothes, way of thinking, and the obstacles they faced while ruling the most powerful country in the world. The historical accuracy of the novels is impeccable. There were times when I had to Google the facts just to make sure what I was reading really happened.

Although the novels’ foundation is History, its most endearing quality is the heart of the stories. A lot of writers can just feed never-ending facts to their readers, but Gregory gives life to her characters. She goes into the minds of her protagonists with utmost sensitivity that you eventually get to care and root for them in the end.

One character that struck me the most was Catalina, Infanta of Spain. In The Constant Princess, we learn that at a young age, she was betrothed to Arthur with the promise that she would one day become Queen of England. She inherited the courage and faith of her mother, Isabella. She knew that her only goal in life was to marry the prince and rule the country destined to be in her power. When Arthur died before being crowned, the people assumed that the Infanta would go back to Spain and live in a house alone as a widow. What they didn’t know was that they were facing a character much stronger and more persistent than they ever expected. Backed up by her faith and a lie she consistently stood for, Catalina caught the attention of Arthur’s younger brother Henry. They married, and she eventually became Katharine of Aragon, Queen of England.

Catalina is just one of the characters in History that Philippa Gregory gave life to. Her novels let us enter the world of these powerful women who we thought we’d never get to know. She makes reading facts enjoyable and entertaining.

Who, you may ask is Philippa Gregory? She is a historical fiction writer whose background as a bona fide historian paved the way for her acclaimed novels, one of which has been adapted by both TV and film: The Other Boleyn Girl is perhaps her best known work to date. The movie, which stars contemporary film ingenues Scarlett Johanssen and Natalie Portman, along with one of my personal favorites, Eric Bana, was nominated for three awards. More than anything else, the book and film rekindled a worldwide fascination for the Tudor period.

In The White Queen, Gregory maps out the intriguing lives of the Plantagenets, the family of royals that preceeded the Tudors. The book does so by focusing on Elizabeth Woodville and her secret marriage to the King of England, a union that would spawn one of the greatest tragedies and mysteries in history: The young princes who were imprisoned in the London Tower, all for the sake of ambition and greed. The White Queen is the first in Gregory's new series of books.

There's something about babies that gets most people I know all soft and gooey inside. I am the proud aunt of twin girls who were born in early 2010. I've been spending every weekend at their house (well most) since they were born, and was witness to a lot of their firsts. They are both starting to show real signs of character already, and even if they are nearly identical, I've learned to tell them apart just by their expressions. Babies are interesting and lovely creatures. Its nice to know how we all once were when we were that young. Sometimes I feel that they know a LOT more about the world than we think they do.

Being the fair aunt that I want to be, I figured six books for each of them would be just right, and this would be a good time for them to start learning how to share! Ha! I also love Sesame Street. Its a love that extends to the classic version of the 70s and early 80s, and to the newer spin offs. I want to be the aunt that gets them hooked! (It is also perfect for them since this is ideal and SAFE for children 10 months and over).

I've never been much of a photographer. My photos are usually out of focus or just plain blah. My cousin is a completely different story. I am proud to say that she hasn't stopped taking photos--and traveling to capture the world through her camera lens--and would probably have a good career as a travel photographer if she wanted to, which she doesn't. "It will dampen my enthusiasm for it," she says. Even if she pretty much knows the ropes, I would still give her this book because its pretty comprehensive and has a lot of tips from the pros.

I remember what my Senior year was like: it was a lot of fun and bittersweet at the same time. In a way, I was sad to be leaving friends who were such a big part of my daily life--and for so many years. I was anxious about going to college (just the thought scared me truthfully). The great thing is I have a lot of good memories from that one year to last a lifetime.

Most of us are familiar with the phenomenal book-based TV series Sex and the City. The Carrie Diaries is a book that chronicles Carrie Bradshaw's Senior year in high school, therefore this book is appropriate for the Young Adult category or older. I would not recommend this for younger children, and just like any young adult novel, parental supervision is recommended.

This is something I would've given my seatmate in my Senior year. She was on the cheerleading squad and she was also on the honor roll. Everybody liked her, myself included. She was nice to everybody!
